The 6th Texas Irregulars were a mixed group of Irish, German, Polish, Dutch and French soldiers which was commanded by Colonel Le`Roy O`Finnegan, in the American Civil War the regiment was mustered into service in March 4, 1862, near Galveston, Texas. The regiment departed Galveston with 532 men, expecting to pick up various volunteers along the way to join the army of the Tennessee. By the time they reached their destination, they had around 654 soldiers in regiment. The regimental command consisted of Col. Le`Roy O`Finnegan and LtCol. Danilo Agovich. In April of 1862 they were in one of the first brigades that attack Sherman’s men at dawn at the battle of Shiloh. Taking heavy loses the regiment was reassigned to the army of northern Virginia. They were put into a brigade consisting of Texans the brigade commander was Gen. John Bell Hood. They later marched to Gettysburg where the 6th took very heavy loses fighting one unit from Indiana the 44th volunteers. In Tennessee the brigade joined in the sieges of Chattanooga and Knoxville. The 6th Texas was one of the hardest fighting units at Chattanooga.
Colonel Le`Roy O`Finnegan lived to see the end of the war, even though sustaining multiple wounds throughout the war. He was loved by his men; his boys gave a little slogan “Colonel never backed down from a hard fight.”
